Remembering Harry

He gave freely, loved deeply, and lived with a quiet nobility that time itself cannot diminish.

Harry Richard Holden, known lovingly to all as Harry and remembered in the tender light of a long and honorable life, departed this world on October 13, 2026, in Covington, Georgia, at the age of 84. Born on October 9, 1942, in Washington, DC, he came into this life with a steady spirit and a generous heart, and he left it having touched many souls with kindness, loyalty, and quiet strength.

He was the son of Randall Francis and Loraine Holden, and from his earliest days he carried himself with the dignity of one who understood duty and devotion. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, by his wife of 50 years, Mary Kimble Holden, by his sister Ann Loraine Frank, and by his brother Randall Wayne Holden. Though death hath claimed those dear to him, the love they shared endures still, woven into the story of his life like gold thread in a noble tapestry.

Harry served proudly in the United States Army, answering the call of service with honor and resolve. In that season of his life, as in all others, he showed the steadfastness of a man who believed in country, in responsibility, and in doing what was right. After his military service, he worked as a computer programmer for the United States Government until his retirement, applying his mind with patience and precision to work that mattered. His career was marked not by vanity, but by faithful labor, and he carried out his duties with the same calm reliability that marked his character in all things.

Yet Harry was never only a man of work and duty, for he also embraced the joys of this good earth with a grateful heart. He loved camping, golf, being around the water, and gardening, and he found delight in the outdoors in all its forms. He was an avid bowler, and in that pastime, as in life, he brought both skill and good humor. He enjoyed a good recliner, as though he understood that rest, too, is a gift. He was ever one who loved to give gifts, and in that simple grace of giving, he revealed the generous measure of his soul. Above all earthly pleasures, he loved his family, and in their company he found his deepest gladness.

His life was not only one of private devotion, but also of service to others. He volunteered with the Special Olympics Special Athletes, Special Smiles program, and through that work he brought encouragement, joy, and dignity to many. For his faithful service, he received special awards, a fitting tribute to a man whose kindness was not spoken only in words, but made visible in action. He was also a member of the Shriners, and in that fellowship he joined with others in service and goodwill. Such deeds stand as lasting witness that his life was one of compassion and purpose.

Harry is survived by his sons, Eric Holden and his wife Elizabeth of Hapeville, and Blair Holden and his wife Emily of Decatur. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Maggie, Lucy, Carmen, and Freya, whose lives were brightened by his affection and whose memories shall carry his name forward. He is also survived by his sister Carol Martin of Richmond, Virginia, and by several nieces and nephews, all of whom hold their own treasured remembrances of his warmth and presence.

Though his earthly journey is ended, the measure of Harry Richard Holden remains rich and full. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, veteran, servant, and friend. He walked through this world with a steady step, a kind word, and a heart inclined toward others. In the manner of the finest men, he asked much of himself and little of those around him. He gave freely, loved deeply, and lived with a quiet nobility that time itself cannot diminish.

Now let the memory of Harry be kept with honor. Let those who knew him speak of his laughter, his devotion, his service, and his gentle ways. Let the waters he loved, the greens where he played, the campsites he cherished, and the family table he treasured all stand as small and faithful monuments to a life well lived. For though he has passed beyond mortal sight, the goodness he sowed remains, and the love he bestowed endures in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
